May it be known that this compilation is related primarily to �PLURIMUS MOENIUM intus ager EBORACUM� and is not intended to be a complete, or even a partially complete heraldic list of all noble or gentle families relating to the County of York. Additional sources such as memorials, pedigrees, and manorial material have also been employed. Where it is possible all sources have been quoted, while those lacking a quoted source can for the most part be verified from the appropriate Victoria County History. Here I have to confess to a mistake in the spelling of Burke�s Armouries � which I had it in my head was spelt Bourke�s. This is unforgivable, but to change those C.o.A.�s where this mistake has occurred would simply take too long. I hope I will be forgiven.

The names of families are often quoted in different styles, not un-commonly with the post Norman prefix of �De� meaning �of � from�. Where this occurs, the prefix has been added within brackets, but also in some cases included in that section of the alphabetical listing, which may lead to some confusion and duplication. The inclusion of both can be justified as both styles often appear in relevant documents and manuscripts.
