some photographic memories of york and the east riding

This small collection of photographic images of York and the East Riding, it is hoped, will provide a window into by-gone times.  They are not photographic works of art, nor are they of any particular historical interest.  They do show places and views which depict a kind of ‘halcyon days’ period in as much as ‘things’ were so much quieter then.  Look at the road vehicles, or lack of them, the people were included, how they are dressed, and how few they are in comparison to today’s hustle and bustle of massed tourism.  Taken in general between 75 and 50 years ago, they are simply how things used to be, in places which today are so familiar.  In many cases the scenes captured have changed little or not at all, while in some others there are only photographs to remind us of what was.  At the same time, they seem to show some sort of idyll which in reality never existed; they are an anachronism.  Many will have seen, or may have collections of older images, images from a time before the Great War of 1914 - 1918.  They can be hugely fascinating, but at the same time they seem to be mystical and illusory.  This collection shows how places were in my father’s time and my grandfather’s time; in that respect they seem more genuine, more valid.

They have been divided into sections for ease of viewing, and captions are provided for many.
